Brief

Following the success of ‘Nobody Wants Me Around’, the band wanted to continue with the same aesthetic, building up to an EP. This meant extrapolating the design language of this cover into a series of covers, all on a limited budget, leading to a certain resourcefulness to produce high quality graphics within the band’s means.

01. ‘Nobody Wants Me Around’

The first of the series of singles leading up to the release of a full EP, the cover art for Nobody Wants Me Around was to define the aesthetic of the following releases. The band wanted to feature an alien character that tied into the themes in their music; I was able to advise how to achieve this quickly and affordably. Editing the band’s resulting photos to match the analogue film effect they wanted, I then set about experimenting with ways to incorporate the band’s other requirements such as the band name and song title.

Alternative compositions and test edits including the first instance of the chrome OMA logo in the ‘Wriggle’ font that would come to be a recurring feature of the covers.

02. ‘Solomon The Rich Kid’

The band now wanted to replicate the style established with ‘Nobody Wants Me Around’ for the rest of the singles and supplied photographs with a new character related to the song. These required significant editing to convey the more glam feel the band had gone for in their choice of costume. Despite being a digital release, we continued and expanded on the faux packaging theme.

03. ‘Voicemail’

With another character and costume developed by the band, I pitched a more dynamic composition than the previous covers. The band then shot the elements needed to construct the cover. This was the most involved edit of them all, compositing the photography and layering recurring elements such as the chrome logo and sticker.

The band decided they wanted a combination of these sticker designs for the final cover. Personally I enjoyed the slightly ‘on-the-nose’ voice-note design, with the duration of the track resembling Messenger styling, even if the holographic sticker matched the rest of the cover better.

OMA Logo

General purpose band logo, used for social media, video intros, watermarks, stickers etc. With these use cases, the brief was initially to design lettering for ‘OMA’, however I pushed for a compromise between a legible word and an abstraction of the band’s brand. The resulting design is applicable and recognisable in a broad range of contexts, as well as evoking the letter shapes of the band name.
Some of the many iterations leading up to and experimenting with the shape-based design. The band were interested in retro-media at the time, so I took inspiration from VHS video graphics when designing these iterations. The scope for animation was considered alongside the design of the still-image logo.

I came to see the logo as a collection of shapes to be rearranged and reinterpreted rather than a strictly defined symbol. The simplicity of the logo makes it instantly recognisable in any number of applications.
